- A new study from Mining and Materials Markets Ltd (MM Markets) finds that there’s no shortage of available aluminum for recycling in the United States.

There is simply no valid justification for restrictions on the export of recycled aluminum. Access to global markets is critical to the health and viability of the U.S. recycled materials industry, which is why ReMA has long opposed trade restrictive measures for recycled materials, including export controls. Export restrictions will unfairly distort markets and strand materials where they cannot be consumed. This new study from MM Markets clearly demonstrates that the U.S. produces an excess of supply of recycled aluminum and has an abundant reserve of recoverable aluminum into the future. Thus, any talk about trade restrictions or bans on recycled aluminum ignores the facts and is simply an attempt to distort the markets.

Recycled materials meet a significant percentage of manufacturers’ raw material input needs, making this industry a critical component of the manufacturing supply chain. Trade restrictive measures, including tariffs and export controls, weaken the U.S. recycled materials industry and the domestic manufacturing base that relies on high-quality recycled materials to make new products.
