Meet Cory Bloom, ReMA’s New Manager of State and Local Government Relations

Earlier this month, Cory Bloom joined the ReMA Advocacy, Safety, and Sustainability team as the new Manager of State and Local Government Relations.
Bloom most recently served as State Affairs Associate for the American College of Surgeons, and has a background in member engagements, lobbying, and state and federal policy. Before the American College of Surgeons, he worked on federal policy for AT&T.
Tell me about your role at ReMA.
As ReMA’s Manager of State and Local Government Affairs I expect to be traveling to various states and localities interacting with members and working with Justin Short, ReMA’s Assistant Vice President of State Advocacy. I’ll likely be serving as a resource for our members, supporting policy work groups, being on division meetings, and assisting in any other relevant work for members and the association.
Tell me about your background.
I received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Rutgers University and a master’s in public administration. Then I moved to Washington, D.C. and worked on telecommunications policy for AT&T. Then I got a job at the American College of Surgeons as their State Affairs Associate. I worked there for three years and then I found the job at ReMA.
How did you decide to apply for the position at ReMA?
I knew I wanted to stay in lobbying so when I saw this position open it seemed like it met a lot of my qualifications and interests. I was also able to meet some ReMA staff before I started the position because both ReMA and the American College of Surgeons had booths at the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) in Boston back in August. I was already in the application process before the event, so at the event I got to meet some people on the ground and grab lunch with Justin and learn a little about the role.
What are you looking forward to at ReMA?
I just started, so I’m interested in getting to a spot where I can be useful to members. Whenever you start a new job there’s always a learning curve. So, I’m looking forward to the time when I answer questions and be of assistance to our members.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I’m excited for football season and will be watching Sunday, Monday, and Thursday nights. I enjoy going on short adventures over the weekend with my girlfriend. She’s a teacher, so she’s really busy over the week but likes to plan activities for us to do on the weekends. I also love movies, history, and going out to different events.
