OSHA Hurricane Resources
The 2025 hurricane season is officially underway. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has several resources to help you prepare for, respond to, and recover from hurricanes and related hazards.
According to OSHA, early preparation plays a critical role in ensuring that employers and workers have the necessary equipment, know where to go, and understand how to stay safe in the event of an emergency. OSHA’s Emergency Preparedness and Response pages provide information on how to prepare and train for emergencies, and outline the hazards to be mindful of when an emergency occurs. These resources provide information for employers and workers across industries and include material specifically for those directly involved in response and recovery efforts.
OSHA states that while hurricanes pose significant risks to life and property, tropical storms and depressions can also cause severe damage. Hazards associated with tropical cyclones (which include tropical depressions, tropical storms, and hurricanes) — including flooding, heavy rains, destructive winds, and tornadoes — can be life-threatening. Moreover, hurricane response and recovery workers may face additional hazards such as heat.
To assist in your preparation efforts for the hurricane season, OSHA encourages you to review the following OSHA Safety and Health Topics pages:
- Hurricane Preparedness and Response – Information on hurricane warnings, potential hazards, and safety precautions for employers and workers after a storm.
- Flood Preparedness and Response – Guidance for businesses and workers on preparing for floods and staying safe during and after such events.
- Tornado Preparedness and Response– Resources to help prepare for tornadoes and manage post-event hazards.
- Heat Illness Prevention – OSHA’s campaign to educate employers and workers on recognizing and preventing heat-related illnesses.
