FINAL PUBLIC NOTICE: ReMA Proposed Guidelines for Recycled Plastic, and MRF Specifications Changes

(May 21 – Washington, DC) – On May 12, 2025, the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA) Board of Directors approved changes to the Guidelines for Recycled Plastic and Inbound Residential Dual and Single stream MRF specifications in the ReMA’s ISRI Specifications. As per ReMA’s bylaws, a public comment period will remain open for 30 days after approval of the following specifications (please direct all comments to ReMA Senior Economist Bret Biggers):

Revised Guidelines for Recycled Plastic Specifications:

HDPE Natural Bottles

HDPE Colored Bottles

HDPE Injection Bulky Rigid Plastics

PE Colored Film

PE Furniture Mixed Film

PE Clear Film (Grade A)

PE Clear Film (Grade B)

Plastic Scrap Specifications (preamble)

Revised Inbound Single and Dual Stream Specifications:

The Inbound Residential Single Stream items include, for example, the following items and materials (the full list can be reviewed using the Specification link above):

  1. Uncoated White Office Paper
  2. Magazines
  3. Paper towel rolls
  4. Plastic jugs and containers
  5. Aluminum, tin, and steel beverage containers
  6. Glass jars and bottles (must be clean and dry)
  7. Paper cups (new addition)

The Inbound Residential Dual Stream items include, for example, the following  items and materials (the full list can be reviewed using the Specification link above):

  1. Uncoated White Office Paper, Printing, and Writing paper
  2. Newspaper
  3. Cardboard
  4. Empty PET(#1)
  5. Plastic bottles, jugs, and jars
  6. Cartons
  7. Bulky rigid plastics such as crates, buckets, totes, and baskets
  8. Aluminum and Tin beverages
  9. Paper cups (new addition)
