ReMA Participates in FMCSA’s Annual Our Roads, Our Safety® Initiative

Large trucks fuel our nation’s economy, transporting millions of goods across the country every day. We all share the road with these large vehicles, so it’s important to understand the impact that their size and weight have on how they share the road with other vehicles. Large trucks maneuver differently than other vehicles and it’s critical to know how to operate around them safely.

From Monday, June 2, to Friday June 6, 2025, the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA) is taking part in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) annual Our Roads Our Safety Week. Launched in 2023, this national, annual safety observance helps raise awareness on how to share the road safely with large trucks and buses. Together with the larger safety community, FMCSA is sharing safety tips, resources, and materials that help improve road safety and achieve zero roadway fatalities.

This week, FMCSA is highlighting a different road safety topic and sharing tips for all road users to help keep our roads safe.

  • Monday: Distracted driving
  • Tuesday: Seat belt safety
  • Wednesday: Sharing the road safely with large trucks and buses
  • Thursday: Work zone safety
  • Friday: Safe speed

Below are tips for greater awareness during the week.

Practice Work Zone Safety

Work zones present many hazards, like lane shifts, sudden stops, uneven road surfaces, moving workers and equipment, and more. Unfortunately, fatal work zone crashes continue to rise – so it’s vital to take work zone safety seriously:

  • Slow down, maintain extra following space, and be prepared to stop.
  • Obey all work zone signs and signals.
  • Scan ahead for changing traffic patterns and be alert to vehicles entering your blind spots.
  • Keep a sharp eye out for road workers and flag crews.

Plan Your Trip in Advance

Stay up to date on weather and road conditions, detours, and mountainous routes to plan appropriate driving time. Be aware that non-commercial navigation systems and apps may not provide warnings of height and weight limitations and other CMV restrictions.

Check Your Blind Spots

Check mirrors every 8-10 seconds to be aware of vehicles entering your blind spots. Additionally, scan ahead on the road about 15 seconds (equating to a quarter mile on interstates, or one to two blocks in cities) for traffic issues, work zones, and other dangers.

Additional Resources

Keeping our roads safe requires everyone to take part. ReMA members can participate in Our Roads, Our Safety® Week by downloading the educational resources provided by FMCSA and sharing them with their communities.
