Environmental Compliance

The recycled materials industry is a sustainable industry that promotes economic growth while preserving the environment and natural resources. Like any manufacturer, recycling facilities are subject to a number of regulations. However, because the industry produces specification-grade commodities from unprocessed scrap and other scrap materials, some regulatory requirements are unique to the industry.

Regulations & Compliance

Recycling facilities are subject to a number of regulations under the Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA; also known as “Superfund”). Environmental regulations of particular relevance to the industry are highlighted below.

Compliance guidelines regarding the metal shredding operations having the potential to emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Definition of Solid Waste (DSW)

Compliance guidelines regarding the DSW which is the basis for RCRA regulations.

Stormwater

Compliance guidelines regarding stormwater management which is one of the most important issues for the recycling industry.

Chemical Data Reporting (CDR)

Compliance guidelines regarding CDR’s potential applicability to recycling operations.

Appliance Recycling

Compliance guidelines regarding the recycling of small appliances, motor-vehicle air conditioners (MVACs), and MVAC-like appliances.

Recycled Materials

Recycled materials are a big part of life. We help make items that you use and depend on every day. From the wiring and plumbing in your home, to the coffee maker that gets your day started. From the roads, bridges, and highways you travel on, to the schools our children learn in – maybe even the laptop or smartphone you’re reading this on. They all likely contain recycled material.
